Reading the website

You do not need an account to read the publication. Delivering a webpage involves technical information such as your IP address, requested URL, request time and browser details. The hosting provider may process this information to deliver content, maintain reliability and investigate abuse. This is separate from advertising or audience analytics.

Hosting provider: Vercel

The current website has no advertising scripts, third-party audience analytics, comment system or embedded social widgets. Fonts and icons are served with the site. We do not use website activity to build advertising profiles or make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on readers.

Display preferences and search

Choosing a color theme stores only your light or dark preference in this tab’s session storage so it follows you between pages and reloads. If you choose “Remember appearance on this device,” we also save it in local storage for later visits. You can switch remembering off or clear both choices at any time. See Cookies & storage for details and controls.

Reading-size changes last for the open article. Search runs in your browser against our article index; there is no separate search analytics service. Search terms in a URL may appear in your browser history and hosting request logs. Avoid entering private information into search.

When you contact us

Email shares your address, message and any attachments with the publisher and its email provider. We use correspondence to respond to enquiries, assess pitches, check reporting, handle corrections and deal with rights or privacy requests. Contact is voluntary; without enough information we may be unable to investigate or reply.

Email provider: Resend

Please do not send patient records, identifying medical details or confidential documents through ordinary email. If a story requires sensitive information, agree an appropriate channel and handling arrangements with the editor first.

Why we may process personal information

For ordinary website delivery, security and editorial correspondence, our lawful basis is legitimate interests: operating a reliable publication, responding to readers and maintaining an accountable editorial record. We must balance those interests against individuals’ rights. Remembering an appearance preference is optional and follows your choice. Where we must process information to comply with a legal obligation, that obligation is the basis. Reporting that involves sensitive personal information requires a separate assessment; this notice does not establish a basis for every future story.

Who may receive information

The publisher and service providers supporting hosting and correspondence may handle the information needed for their work. Information may also be disclosed where required by law or where necessary to address a legal claim. We do not sell readers’ personal information or share it for cross-site advertising.

Where information is processed

Vercel and Resend process information outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States. Resend’s selected sending region does not mean that message content is stored only in that region. The providers’ data-processing agreements include standard contractual clauses and UK transfer addenda. Readers can contact editorial@healthcareedition.com for information about the safeguards relevant to their data.

How long information is kept

Hosting and security records. Vercel processes technical request and security information to operate and protect the hosting service. Its privacy notice describes retention according to operational, security and legal needs, followed by deletion or anonymisation when no longer needed. We do not promise one fixed retention period for all provider records. Any records we separately retain to investigate an incident will be limited to what is necessary for that investigation and any related legal obligation.

Editorial correspondence and requests. We keep routine enquiries only while handling the matter and, where useful for follow-up, for up to 12 months after closure. We may retain necessary records of corrections, permissions, complaints and disputes for longer while they support published reporting or a legal obligation. The editor reviews these retained records annually and removes material no longer needed. Provider storage and backup limits apply separately; we retain only the necessary record rather than an entire mailbox archive.

Appearance preference. Stored on your device until you turn remembering off, clear the preference on our Cookies & storage page, or your browser removes site data.

Newsletters

If you join the Healthcare Edition list, we use your email address and a record of your signup choice, its date and the form wording to register your interest in future email briefings. This processing is based on your consent. Briefings have not started. We send a short thank-you email when you sign up and retain an acknowledgement record to avoid repeat emails. This message does not verify ownership of the email address. We do not track opens or clicks in this email. Vercel handles your form submission and Resend stores your address and signup record. Healthcare Edition uses a separate Resend account for this list. Joining it does not subscribe you to Docio updates, and we do not copy these signups to Docio’s mailing list. You can withdraw your interest at any time by emailing editorial@healthcareedition.com. We will remove your Healthcare Edition list membership, signup record and acknowledgement record when you withdraw; this does not remove a separate subscription you have with another publication or service. We will review this interest list within 12 months of collection and remove entries if the briefing has not launched, unless you renew your interest. Necessary records of a withdrawal or dispute may be retained while needed to honour your choice or meet a legal obligation. The international processing and privacy rights described in this policy also apply.

Your privacy choices and rights

Under UK data protection law, you may have rights to access and correct your personal information, request erasure or restriction, and obtain portability where applicable. These rights depend on the circumstances and are not absolute. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact the publisher to exercise a right; we assess requests and respond within the applicable legal time limits.

Right to object: you can object to our use of your personal information where we rely on legitimate interests. Explain your concern using the contact details above.

Contact the publisher with enough detail to locate the information concerned. We may ask for proportionate information to confirm your identity. Please do not send identity documents unless we have explained why they are needed and agreed a suitable way to provide them.

Complaints

You may raise a privacy concern with the publisher and complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Contacting us first can help resolve a concern, but does not remove your right to approach the regulator.

Contact the ICO or find out how to make a complaint.

Information in reporting and external websites

Reporting may refer to people and information from public sources. Questions about accuracy, privacy or attribution in an article can be raised through our contact page. Requests concerning published reporting require an editorial assessment as well as consideration of applicable rights; a request does not automatically remove the public record.

Following a source or other external link takes you to a website with its own privacy practices.

Changes to this notice

We update this notice when our practices change and show the revision date above. We will seek a separate choice where a new optional feature requires one. This notice does not itself request consent to tracking.
