Your choices

You can read this site without enabling optional browser storage. The application does not set advertising, analytics or login cookies. We do not load advertising trackers or social media embeds.

The only persistent preference used by the application is an optional light or dark theme. It uses local storage, which stays in your browser and is not automatically sent with website requests as a cookie would be.

Remembering your appearance preference

The color-mode button saves your chosen theme for this tab, so following links or reloading keeps the same appearance. If you select “Remember appearance on this device” in the footer, the site also saves your chosen theme for later visits. Remembering for later visits is off unless you enable it.

• Stored value: light or dark, under he-appearance-session for this tab and, if enabled, he-appearance-choice for later visits.
• Purpose: use the appearance you requested.
• Location: your browser’s session storage for this tab and optional local storage for this website.
• Duration: the tab’s browsing session for the temporary choice (which your browser may restore when reopening a tab). The optional device preference lasts until you turn remembering off, clear the preference, or the browser removes it.
• Recipients: this preference is read by the site in your browser; our application does not transmit it to a server.

Uncheck “Remember appearance on this device” in the footer to remove the preference for later visits; your theme still follows you between pages in this tab. The button below clears both stored choices for this tab and device. The current page keeps its appearance until you navigate, reload or change the theme again.

Other page controls

The reading-size control and navigation menu do not save persistent preferences. Searching downloads the public article index. It does not create a search profile, although terms in a URL can remain in browser history and hosting logs.

Hosting security services and external websites have their own processing practices. This notice describes storage used by this website’s code; external sites may set their own cookies.Our Privacy policy describes the publication’s providers and handling of request information.

New features

If we introduce optional analytics, advertising or embedded media, we will update these details and provide the required choices before enabling those features. The appearance setting does not give permission for other uses of browser storage.
